2004 Golden Heart Finalists

The year is 1819, and Tristan Knight, the fifth Earl of Ellington, is at his wit’s end. He has just returned to London after an absence of eight years in order to take over his late father’s title and to assume guardianship of his younger sister, Emily. To his dismay, he finds out that looking after a fourteen-year-old girl is no easy matter, and when his headstrong sibling rebels against his authority and runs away, he is frantic. After his mother’s death at the hands of street thieves, he has long been haunted by his inability to save her, and the thought of his sister wandering the dangerous alleys of the city fills him with alarm. In desperation, he turns to the most notorious widow in London for help.

Deirdre Wilks, Viscountess Rotherby, had believed she had put her past as a Tothill Fields pickpocket far behind her. Rescued from the streets when she was still just a child by the kindly Viscount Rotherby, she eventually wed him, and she has spent her life since his death lending her aid to the people of the rookeries. But when the Earl of Ellington approaches her in order to ask for her assistance in locating his missing sister, it brings back dark memories. Memories of a time she’d rather forget.

Despite her misgivings, Deirdre agrees to help him in his quest, and as she leads him into the dark underbelly of the city, exposing him to the harsh reality of the life she once lived, Tristan’s eyes are opened to the plight of the poverty-stricken denizens of the streets.

But even as he becomes aware of a new respect for the woman at his side--as well as a powerful attraction--he discovers that his sister is on the run from a murderous madman who is intent on quieting the only witness to a brutal crime: Emily. And as Deirdre becomes more and more involved in Tristan’s life, she fights to conceal her horrible secret. A secret that threatens to put an end to the love slowly starting to grow between them.
